Prayer

The most widely practiced method for finding a calling is prayer. Prayer is about creating and maintaining a personal relationship with the Divine. It is easy for you to talk with your friends and receive their advice and counsel. In the same way, create an intimate relationship with God. Any method of conceptualizing the Divine that makes Him or Her a palpable living presence in your life will help you to achieve this intimacy. If you think of God as your friend, beloved, Mother, or Father, the divinity within will respond to you in that way.

You may want to use one of the following to invoke His or Her response with regard to your calling.

Father, make my work a calling to serve You.

Divine Mother, fill me with your love that I may serve you by serving others.

My Beloved, I want to serve in the way You intended.

Heavenly Father, I will reason, will and act, and guide my reason, will, and activity to the right thing that I should do.

My Divine Friend, I work for you. I use the talents You gave me to create heaven on Earth.

Prayer is about your personal relationship with God. Since everyone is unique, there are as many ways to pray as there are people in the world. Please bear in mind that prayer is simply the first part of your divine communion. After you pray, be quiet so you can begin to feel the divine response in your heart. When your quiet time after prayer is filled with inner peace, understanding, or joy, you will know that you have been heard.

At times it may seem your prayers have gone unheeded. On such occasions it is helpful to remember past experiences where a seeming lack of response was the perfect response and a blessing in disguise. You can acknowledge that God knows what is best for you by repeating the prayer of Sri Gyanamata, “Change no circumstance in my life; change me.”

Charles has a friend named Carl who lost his job. Carl’s wife, Frances, continued to work but they could not survive on her salary alone; they needed to use Carl’s retirement money to supplement Frances’ income. Carl was doing everything he could to find a job, including searching the employment ads, using an executive placement service, enduring many job interviews and praying diligently every day.

After a year had passed, Carl felt he was ready for a new job. During the course of the next interview, Carl knew he had found his new job. It was the perfect position, utilizing all his skills and knowledge. Many of the positions Carl had applied for during the previous year were for a salary considerably lower than what he had been making. This job offered the same salary as his most recent job. This scenario has occurred on two different occasions in Carl’s life.

Another reason prayers may elicit no response is due to a conscious, subconscious or unconscious belief of unworthiness. People pray sincerely and deeply—asking for that which they desire—but then place a glass ceiling over their heads with feelings of unworthiness.
